The £5 Pickled Money Order Receipt

By Riason Naidoo

Money never sleeps, they say and in this filmic sequence, all that the characters wish is that it would occasionally sit still. Naidoo’s tragicomedy retells the true story of the journey of a sum of five pound sterling (in the form of a money order receipt) from an Indian indentured sugarcane laborer in Natal, South Africa to his father in British India. Somewhere in this incredible journey the money order falls in to a vat of gooseberry pickle, and the whole thing has to be started over again.
